[2019 International Academic Visit- University of Otago] .- PART 1
Greetings everyone!
After so many plans and all the bookings, we manage to organize an academic visit to Dunedin, New Zealand! wuhoo! Though not many of us go, here are some of the memories throughout the visit, enjoy!
He is Prof Haizal! He is the man who makes this academic trip happens! He even personally welcome us at the airport despite his busy schedule! #ukmfggakacademicvisit
Day 1 in Otago- We were truly grateful that we had chance to be lead by Ms Victoria McEniary who brought us around the lovely campus. Afterwards, we were greeted by the Malaysian postgraduate students here, and had a wonderful experiences sharing session with them. We realized that there are so many things to be explore and learned in the future. Being an undergraduate is just the beginning. Last but not least, we ended up the day with an amazing meeting with the NZDSA ( New Zealand Dental Student Association). They were kind enough to explain more about the dental school. It was a very eye-opening experience! 👏🏻 @universityofotago#ukmdensta #ukmdenstainotago

. “We were meant to explore this earth like children do, unhindered by fear, propelled by curiosity and a sense of discovery. Allow yourself to see the world through new eyes and know there are amazing adventures here for you.” Laurel Bleadon Maffei
Day 2 in Otago 📚
We kicked start the day with an interesting prosthodontics lecture by Dr Sunyoung Ma, joining their daily class for a closed-up experience on the learning process there. Then we had been greeted by Nick Heng for a trip in microbiology lab which allowed us to gain more knowledge on their laboratory set ups.
Later on the day, they gave a sneak peak of the new building of the Faculty of Dentistry in Otago. ( They finally shift it after 62 years 👏🏻) Lastly, we went to their Unipol to visit their sports facilities. It was amazing as we got a chance to play with them too! ⛹🏻♂️ #ukmdenstainotago

Day 3 in Otago 📚
Then, we were invited by Dr. Alison Rich, the Head Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences to join a discussion with the Oral Pathology post graduate students. Surprisingly we learnt more than what we expected!

. “At the beginning of any hui, following the pōwhiri (formal welcome) or the mihi whakatau (a welcome, as practised off marae across the Ngāi Tahu tribal region), a round of introductions and speeches – or mihimihi – usually occurs. During this time, people ordinarily stand to share a little bit about where they come from and who they are in relation to this (i.e. share their pepeha, or tribal aphorism); many share significant parts of their whakapapa (genealogy).”

For our visit, Mihi was beautifully given by Mr Samuel Carrington,
Deputy Associate Dean (Māori) and Pacific Student Support Staff Member for the Pacific Islands Research and Student Support Unit for the Faculty of Dentistry.
